Pol Pot

Pol Pot was the leader of Cambodia's Communist regime, the Khmer Rouge. He began by evacutaing cities and forcing everyone to move into rural farming communities. He executed anyone who represented the "old society", as well as ethnic minorities. This included intellectuals, former government officials/soldiers, the Chinese, Muslims of Cham culture, and others. The Khmer Rouge strictly controlled the lives of its citizens. Money, books, private property, and religion were outlawed. Arranged marriages were forced.

During Pol Pot's regime, 1.5 million Cambodian citizens died due to overwork, illness, and starvation. Former proffesionals were taken from their homes and put in detention centers. Those that complained about the conditions were tortured and killed. Children were often taken from their homes to serve in the Army. The country was filled with mass graves.

In 1979, Phnom Penh was captured. A Vietnamese army overthrew the Khmer Rouge. Pol Pot was found guilty of genocide, but, he was never imprisoned. He died in 1998 with no justice done.
